Rohais Belrose. Dutch Oven. December 07th , 2016.
If you grew up camping with the Boy Scouts, you`ve probably got fond memories of meals and desserts cooked on a hot bed of coals in a Dutch Oven. But I have found that many people today don`t know a lot about Dutch Ovens and how they can improve camp cookery. And many people think that the Dutch Oven is a relic from pioneer days. Luckily, this venerable implement is alive and well and helping to provide tasty campfire desserts for today`s campers.
If you have just started cooking using this piece of cookware, make sure that you keep in mind some important tips. It may be basic and quite similar to other cooking advices, but keep in mind that this particular cooking ware has a different structure. The structure: A modern day dutch oven has three legs but is smooth-bottomed. Since French people are so fond of this type of cooking ware, they are more familiar with the le crueset dutch oven, one of the French enameled dutch oven manufacturers.
Some off-brands will use different alloys or different sources for their cast iron stock. That can make for variations in the thickness of the pot, as well as the density of the metal. In either case, that can make for more uneven heating and hotspots. Unfortunately, you can`t really check for that in the store. It`s one reason why you might want to go with a more respected brand.
Dutch ovens can be selected according to how and where you are going to use them. Basically, they are functional and convenient enough to be used both indoors in your kitchen and outdoors during camping. For outdoors, the Dutch oven should be made of bare and heavy cast iron with 3 legs at the base, a tight lid for supporting the charcoal, and a wire handle. Outdoor Dutch ovens distribute heat internally like typical household ovens.
The basic idea of cooking with a Dutch oven is slow, slow, slow! After your morning campfire for your breakfast and coffee and you are ready to hit the trails or stream, you bury your Dutch oven in the coals with a great meal inside that will be waiting for you when you get back! But we`ll get back to that shortly!
