Destanee Fournier. Dutch Oven. April 11th , 2017.
Hence, for your camping trip, make sure you have a Lodge Dutch oven with you. Any meal will definitely turn out great with this versatile and portable cookware that you can bring with you at any destination. Even when not on a trip, you can still use these ovens. You can also refrigerate, marinate, freeze and cook food items with this type of oven.
The basic idea of cooking with a Dutch oven is slow, slow, slow! After your morning campfire for your breakfast and coffee and you are ready to hit the trails or stream, you bury your Dutch oven in the coals with a great meal inside that will be waiting for you when you get back! But we`ll get back to that shortly!
Seasoning is when you coat your new cast iron oven with oil or grease and "cook" it in your oven or campfire for several hours. Generally a couple to four hours are fine. The more the better. This process can get smoky in your oven so make sure you have your vent on. Basically this lets the oil or grease prepare the metal for even cooking and adds that special touch to cast iron cooking.
If you have just started cooking using this piece of cookware, make sure that you keep in mind some important tips. It may be basic and quite similar to other cooking advices, but keep in mind that this particular cooking ware has a different structure. The structure: A modern day dutch oven has three legs but is smooth-bottomed. Since French people are so fond of this type of cooking ware, they are more familiar with the le crueset dutch oven, one of the French enameled dutch oven manufacturers.
The best Dutch ovens I`ve ever seen come from three companies: Lodge, Camp Chef, and Maca. There are lots of littler brands, like Texsport and a few that are even no-name. You can often come across Dutch ovens at yard sales and antique stores. Some Dutch oven chefs I know will swear by one brand or another. While it`s true that there are some that are better made, keep in mind that our pioneer ancestors cooked successfully in Dutch ovens made hundreds of years before modern companies were formed and contemporary casting procedures were invented. I`ve cooked delicious meals in off-brand Dutch ovens. I prefer my lodge, but you can be successful with anything.
