Destanee Fournier. Dutch Oven. April 14th , 2017.
While a good Dutch oven is likely to last a lifetime, a smart shopper will consider the name of the cookware manufacturer along with the quality of its materials. Not everybody shops online, but many people visit online cookware stores to read the reviews and compare prices, which also gives you all the information you need for a new Dutch oven. With credible evidence of an online store`s physical address and telephone contact details, and a good common sense, you can avoid problems with e-commerce.
So after you have purchased your new cast iron Dutch oven, the first thing you need to do is to give it a very good washing in hot water and soap. This washing will prepare it for seasoning. Many manufactures coat the cast iron with wax or other sealers to preserve the appearance of the utensil. After a good cleaning it is ready for seasoning.
Over generations, this cookware has made it`s mark in the kitchen and outside cooking. Mainly though, it is popular for long and slow cooking. Call it however you may, the casserole dish of Britain, tetsunabe of Japan, the Australian bush stew or cocotte by the French, the dutch oven is ideal for cooking the same meals that it was originally made for back in the 1600s.
Seasoning is when you coat your new cast iron oven with oil or grease and "cook" it in your oven or campfire for several hours. Generally a couple to four hours are fine. The more the better. This process can get smoky in your oven so make sure you have your vent on. Basically this lets the oil or grease prepare the metal for even cooking and adds that special touch to cast iron cooking.
After the oven has dried, set it on a stove to ensure that it has dried completely. Apply a layer of shortening from the inside towards the outside right after. Put it inside a preheated oven to 350 degrees F and let it stay there for an hour, more or less. After this process, wipe to remove excess grease and insert a paper towel in between the lid and oven when storing. Keep in mind though that a newly cleaned dutch oven should not be immediately used for any food recipe that contains vinegar or tomatoes. But it is recommended using a newly cleaned dutch oven for deep frying bacon, chicken and other similar ingredients.
