Destanee Fournier. Dutch Oven. April 18th , 2017.
If you grew up camping with the Boy Scouts, you`ve probably got fond memories of meals and desserts cooked on a hot bed of coals in a Dutch Oven. But I have found that many people today don`t know a lot about Dutch Ovens and how they can improve camp cookery. And many people think that the Dutch Oven is a relic from pioneer days. Luckily, this venerable implement is alive and well and helping to provide tasty campfire desserts for today`s campers.
Your camping cooking equipment will not be complete without the `ole standard of camping, the Dutch Oven. When you look at the market for them, there are plenty of choices for a new oven but I want to help you select an oven that will work well for you and will be something you pass down to your kids. I know of ovens that are over a hundred years old, passed from generation to generation. Take care of your oven and you can do that too.
When you are in the outdoors, you will definitely have a wonderful time engaging in so many activities. You can have a swim on the lake, or have nature trails. After a tiring yet fun activity, it is great to sit down and relax while you enjoy a hearty meal. Thus, you will need a cookware that is perfect for this situation. Since the campfire is your only source of heat, your cookware should withstand such direct heat.
Dutch ovens come in different styles, metals, sizes, qualities and brands. Before deciding to buy, make a good listing in mind of what to look for when getting a new oven cooker. Buying without planning makes it easy to buy the wrong one, and using a cooker that you don`t enjoy can influence your cooking. It is only essential to understand the features and costs of different Dutch ovens.
Seasoning is when you coat your new cast iron oven with oil or grease and "cook" it in your oven or campfire for several hours. Generally a couple to four hours are fine. The more the better. This process can get smoky in your oven so make sure you have your vent on. Basically this lets the oil or grease prepare the metal for even cooking and adds that special touch to cast iron cooking.
